Steinhauser Obtains German Stage Victory, Halts Pogacar Supreme Reign
Georg Steinhauser, a 22-year-old cyclist, recently made a significant mark in professional cycling by triumphing in the mountains during the Giro d'Italia. During this race, the young rider managed to outperform even the dominant Tadej Pogacar.
Steinhauser showed astonishment, raising his arms in the air and slapping his hands in front of his face as disbelief seized him. This impressive solo race in the Alps not only halted Pogacar's winning streak but also secured the first German stage win at this year's edition of the Giro d'Italia. The young cyclist triumphed in the mountain arrival on the Passo Brocon, a 159 kilometer race, marking his first professional victory. Pogacar, who had already won five stages, attempted a late attack, ultimately finishing in second place while trailing behind the leader by a sizable 1 minute and 30 seconds. However, this allowed him to extend his overall lead.
Steinhauser expressed his disbelief, "I can't believe it. I knew I had good legs. I tried my luck and it paid off. I was incredibly nervous during the last climb. I heard that Pogacar had attacked. But there were just two kilometers left. I then knew that it was possible for me to succeed."
Steinhauser's father, Tobias, fought back tears in the Eurosport studio and expressed immense pride: "This is pure emotion. I'm not envious of him. It was a wonderful race. He's better than his father. He deserves this."
Breaking away from fellow breakaway rider Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier from Eritrea when there were only 34 kilometers left, Steinhauser could not be caught on the 11.9-kilometer final climb with an average gradient of 6.4 percent. The last German stage win at the Giro d'Italia took place last year through Nico Denz.
Steinhauser, who has been part of the American racing team EF Education since his professional debut in 2022, only recently captured third place in the mountain finish in Livigno. Steinhauser's father, Tobias, once rode in a team with Jan Ullrich. Additionally, Ullrich was married to Steinhauser's aunt Sara for over ten years.
The race for overall victory remains unchallenged for Pogacar. The Slovenian is almost eight minutes ahead of Colombian Daniel Felipe Martinez, a cyclist from the German Bora-hansgrohe team. It is highly unlikely that this lead will change on Thursday when a sprint finish is expected on the 178-kilometer 18th stage from Fiera di Primiero to Padua.
