Steffen Baumgart is no longer coach of 1 FC Köln
The defeat at Union Berlin was apparently too much: Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln and coach Steffen Baumgart are parting ways, according to consistent reports. Baumgart had led the club to international business after taking up his post in 2021, now it's time for a crash and a farewell.
Steffen Baumgart is no longer the coach of Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln, according to reports in the Bild newspaper and Sky. The 51-year-old and the club's management are said to have agreed to part ways one day after the 2-0 defeat at 1. FC Union Berlin.
Baumgart took up his position in the summer of 2021 and immediately led the club to the Conference League; in his second year in charge, the 51-year-old established the club in mid-table. However, this season has seen the club plummet: Baumgart and his team picked up just 10 points from their first 16 games, leaving 1. FC Köln in penultimate place in the table for the winter.
After the 2-0 defeat to Union Berlin, Baumgart, whose contract runs until 2025, had already hinted at a possible departure: "When we see the results of the past few weeks, it's clear that there will be a discussion," said the former striker. "It's not about throwing in the towel. It's about FC and this is my club. It's about what's best for the club." Official confirmation from the club is still pending.

The 1. FC Köln, currently in a tough spot in the Bundesliga with just 10 points from 16 games, has reportedly parted ways with coach Steffen Baumgart following a 2-0 loss to Union Berlin. Unlike their successful run in international competitions under Baumgart's leadership, which included qualifying for the Conference League in his first year, the team has struggled this season.
