"Star Wars: The Acolyte" spins a mystery surrounding the Jedi era's days.

The Acolyte's Thrilling Start:

The show begins with a lot of intensity, as a masked killer with mysterious powers attacks a Jedi master, leading to an exciting fighting scene that resembles "The Matrix" just as much as classic "Star Wars."

Initial suspicion falls on Osha (Amandla Stenberg, star of "The Hate U Give" and "Dear Evan Hansen"), a former padawan who left the Jedi order. Her only apparent ally is her ex-master, Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae, Emmy-winner from "Squid Game"), who rescued Osha as a child following a tragic event that decimated her family. This will play a crucial role in the narrative's mystery and reveal the antagonist.

Despite incorporating a lengthy flashback episode, the series manages to move forward at a steady pace - something criticized in other "Star Wars" live-action series like "Andor." The action is well-executed and visually appealing.

Created by Leslye Headland, director and showrunner of "Russian Doll," "The Acolyte" fits into a unique position within the Disney+ "Star Wars" landscape. It has elements of the dark and gritty "Andor," action-packed scenes that imitate "Ahsoka," and in-depth exploration of Jedi politics and history, similar to the animated "Tales of the Jedi."

However, the primary challenge lies in making viewers care about these characters, who are largely unfamiliar to us, despite their positions in the Jedi order hierarchy. Stenberg and Lee Jung-jae deliver strong performances, effectively engaging the audience and giving the show a diverse edge. Unfortunately, most secondary actors struggle to stand out and feel generic.

The shifting nature of the entertainment industry has significantly changed the way series are developed for streaming, compared to theatrical films. As stewards of the "Star Wars" legacy, Lucasfilm is adjusting, as evident in their big-screen plans for "The Mandalorian." In this context, "The Acolyte" feels like a calculated risk, better suited for streaming than possibly struggling to fill theaters.

At this point, it's unclear whether "The Acolyte" will open new doors for Disney/Lucasfilm or be a mere detour. For now, it's an entertaining and moderately promising "Star Wars" tale. As Yoda once said, "Always in motion is the future."

Premiere Date: Star Wars: The Acolyte launches its first episode on June 4 at 9 p.m. ET on Disney+.

The excitement around "The Acolyte" isn't just about its unique storyline, but also the star-studded cast, with Amandla Stenberg and Lee Jung-jae bringing their A-game to the Jedi-focused series, keeping viewers hooked.
