Soccer icon Roberto Baggio endures head trauma during burglary at his residence, involving armed intruders.

During an unfolding crime investigation, authorities declined to disclose additional information.

The burglary occurred during a European Championship game between Italy and Spain, as Baggio watched the match with his family, according to local news sources.

Reports suggest that Baggio attempted to safeguard his family, and he was allegedly struck on the head with a weapon.

The incident commenced around 10 p.m. local Italian time and endured for approximately 40 minutes, Baggio recounted to journalists outside the hospital in Arzignano, Italy, upon receiving stitches for the head injury.

His family and he were confined to a room while the intruders looted the residence. The exact worth of the stolen items has not been disclosed, local media stated.

The property and surrounding grounds were equipped with security cameras, and as of yet, no arrests have been made by local law enforcement.

"We are deeply grateful for the generosity of well-wishes extended to us," Baggio conveyed to ANSA in a statement.

"In situations like this, unexpected events can transpire, and fortunately, my injury only required a few stitches, some bruises, and a surge of fear. Now, I must conquer my fear."

Luca Zaia, the president of Italy’s Veneto region, expressed his sympathy and support for Baggio and his family in a statement published by local media:

"I extend my empathy and solidarity to Roberto Baggio and his family, and I am confident that Venetians who relished his extraordinary talent on the soccer fields can share their affection and support.

I hope that the ‘Divine Ponytail,’ an iconic figure of our football and our region, can recover swiftly, along with his family, from this harrowing evening and the wounds he sustained, for which he received healthcare attention from the staff in Arzignano, whom I have kept in contact with."

Zaia went on to say: "His experience, as a victim of unscrupulous robbers in his home, mirrors that of other families who have unfortunately suffered similar ordeals. As always, we put our trust in authorities to apprehend the offenders soon."

Post-retirement in 2004, Baggio operates a small agricultural enterprise on his extensive villa in Altavilla Vicentina, local media reported. He practices Buddhism and reportedly owns a minimalist vehicle, according to press accounts and his social media profiles.

The 57-year-old represented Italy in 56 games, scoring 27 goals, and was accorded the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 1993, an award given annually to the world's top player.

Baggio (C), widely regarded as one of the world's best ever soccer players, played for Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan and the Italian national team among others.
