Skoda Roomster: Ample Space Accompanied by Ample Criticism
The VW-owned Czech subsidiary's high-roof combi, the Skoda Roomster, is a versatile vehicle, but it has its critics, particularly at the vehicle inspection (HU). This car, although no longer in production, continues to leave an impression due to its spacious and adaptable interior. however, it may not pass inspection with flying colors. Potential buyers should be aware of its flaws and thoroughly examine the vehicle after purchase.
Originating in 2006, the Roomster underwent a facelift in 2010, featuring a revamped front end, a fresh dashboard, and new engines, including for its fuel-efficient Green Line variant. Production ceased in 2015.
When it comes to dimensions, the Roomster measures 4.21 meters long, 1.68 meters wide, and 1.61 to 1.65 meters tall (L x W x H), with a trunk volume ranging from 480 to 1585 liters (roof-high with folded rear seat bench). It comes in a basic five-seater model with a high roof, and the off-road style Scout version was introduced in 2007.
The Roomster showcases its utility in transporting sports equipment and moving boxes. Its seats are adjustable, foldable, and extendable. The chassis, suspension, shocks, brake discs, brake lines, and hoses are all robust, according to the "Auto Bild TÜV-Report 2024". The foot brake pedal only starts to weaken at the fifth inspection.
However, the Roomster is marred by frequent oil leaks and rusty exhaust systems. Brake discs wear out in almost all years, and at the third inspection, all components of the lighting system have higher failure rates than average. At the fourth inspection, the rear lights are the primary concern. The steering columns also weaken at the third inspection, and rust on the chassis affects the oldest Roomsters.
Regarding reliability, the ADAC rates the Roomster's performance as "good to medium". Its main failure points include faulty ignition cables in cars from the first registration years 2010 and 2012, faulty spark plugs (2008 and 2009), faulty spark plug electrodes, and faulty spark plug connectors (both in 2015).
The Roomster is equipped with gasoline (three- and four-cylinder with front-wheel drive) and diesel (three- and four-cylinder with front-wheel drive) engines, ranging from 47 kW/64 PS to 77 kW/105 PS.
Here are three dealer prices, according to the German Automobile Trust (DAT), for statistically expected kilometers:- Roomster 1.2 TDI Greenline (6/2014); 55 kW/75 PS (Three-cylinder); 155,000 Kilometers; 4,559 Euro.- Roomster 1.2 TSI Scout (6/2015); 77 kW/105 PS (Four-cylinder); 120,000 Kilometers; 7,282 Euro.- Roomster 1.6 TDI DPF Family (6/2012); 77 kW/105 PS (Four-cylinder); 179,000 Kilometers; 4,075 Euro.

Despite its used car market popularity, potential buyers should be mindful of the Skoda Roomster's common issues, such as oil leaks and worn-out brake discs. Due to this, it's essential to consider buying only MOT-passed Skoda Roomster models with Used cars, as they may have undergone necessary repairs to meet the standards.
