World Cup in Lillehammer - Ski jumper Wellinger second behind Kraft in Lillehammer

Olympic champion Andreas Wellinger has brought the German ski jumpers another podium finish. The 28-year-old Bavarian jumped 99 and 92 meters in Lillehammer and was only beaten by Austria's Stefan Kraft in double-digit sub-zero temperatures.

Kraft was again superior to all his rivals after attempts of 104 and 92.5 meters. For him, the success on the normal hill was the third victory in the third competition. Behind Kraft and Wellinger, Daniel Tschofenig from Austria completed the podium. There will be another competition on Sunday, then on the large hill.

Behind Wellinger, Karl Geiger (4th), Pius Paschke (6th) and Stephan Leyhe (9th) also achieved top placings. National coach Stefan Horngacher's team has made a strong start to the winter. "Second place behind Kraft, that's all that's possible at the moment. I'm very satisfied," said Horngacher on ZDF. In the previous week in Ruka, Finland, Paschke, Wellinger and Leyhe each made it onto the podium once. Philipp Raimund (20th) and Martin Hamann (26th) finished a little further back.

The dominant world-class athlete Kraft seems to be unbeatable at the moment. The start of the prestigious Four Hills Tournament with stops in Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck and Bischofshofen is just under four weeks away. Germany has not conquered an overall victory at the traditional event since Sven Hannawald in 2001/02.
