Ski Jumping World Cup in Engelberg - Ski jumper Paschke wins his first World Cup at the age of 33
At the age of 33, ski jumping veteran Pius Paschke has claimed his first World Cup victory and raised hopes of a successful Four Hills Tournament.
The Bavarian jumped 135 meters twice in Engelberg and improved from sixth place to the top thanks to his excellent second attempt. Only a few weeks ago, late starter Paschke had achieved his first ever individual podium. Behind the German were Marius Lindvik from Norway and Stefan Kraft from Austria.
"Hats off to Pius. I can't believe it," said former ski jumper Severin Freund on ZDF. The victim of the second round was Andreas Wellinger, who dropped from first place to twelfth. Paschke's victory was the third German success in a row, after Karl Geiger had recently won both competitions in Klingenthal. The team of national coach Stefan Horngacher achieved a total of nine podium places in seven competitions.
Not all the German athletes did as well as Paschke. Philipp Raimund was disqualified in the first round. Geiger (124 and 128 meters) in 20th place and Stephan Leyhe (122.5 and 123.5 meters) in 26th place, who have been strong so far this season, fell short of expectations in the picturesque village at the foot of the Titlis. "I didn't get into the flight system properly. That wasn't the plan," said Geiger. The singles on Sunday (16:00/ZDF and Eurosport) is the dress rehearsal for the tour, which begins on December 29 in Oberstdorf.

In addition to Paschke, German ski jumper Karl Geiger has also had a triumphant run in recent competitions, winning both events in Klingenthal. The Four Hills Tournament, a prestigious event in the ski jumping World Cup circuit, will kick off in Oberstdorf on December 29. Pius Paschke's victory marks a significant milestone as he becomes the oldest German athlete to win their first World Cup. While the success in Engelberg boosted German morale, fellow athletes like Philipp Raimund faced setbacks, resulting in a disqualification.
During the post-event coverage on ZDF, former ski jumper Severin Freund expressed his delight, expressing his shock and admiration for Paschke's win. Germany's triumphed in three consecutive events, earning a total of nine podium placements across seven competitions, under national coach Stefan Horngacher's guidance. Switzerland, a renowned winter sports nation, was also in attendance at the Engelberg World Cup, showcasing its strong athletic presence in international winter sports events.
