Skate slashes ice hockey player's chest
The tragedy surrounding Adam Johnson is still omnipresent in ice hockey, as there are reports of another serious accident. Jonas Nyhus Myhre has his chest slashed open by a skate blade. "It could have been much worse," says the Norwegian.
Just a few weeks after the horrific death of former Augsburg player Adam Johnson, there was another serious accident in ice hockey, this time fortunately without a fatal outcome. During a game in the Norwegian elite series, junior national player Jonas Nyhus Myhre had his chest slashed open by an opponent's skate blade. "The pectoral muscle was split down the middle," the 19-year-old told the Swedish newspaper "Aftonbladet". It felt as if he had been "kicked by a horse".
Myhre initially continued to play in his club Lörenskog IK's game against Storhamar Hockey. "I had so much adrenaline that I didn't feel it in the first few minutes," said the young defender, "but after five minutes it really started to hurt." The blade had drilled through his protective equipment. In the dressing room, he asked his teammates if it was bleeding. He was then immediately taken to hospital and the wound and muscle were stitched up. "It could have been a lot worse," said Myhre, who will miss the U20 World Championships in Sweden (December 26 to January 5) as a result.
The American Johnson was hit in the neck by a skate at the end of October during a game for his British club Nottingham Panthers. The 29-year-old former DEL professional from Augsburg succumbed to his injuries. The German Ice Hockey League (DEL) decided four weeks ago that all players must wear cut-resistant neck protection from January 1. On Monday, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) also announced that neck protection would be mandatory, but left open the date from which it would be mandatory due to supply difficulties on the part of manufacturers.
