Sigh of relief at BVB - Brandt: "Not fallen into a hole"

The relief was huge. The mature performance in the 2:0 (1:0) win over Newcastle United helped Borussia Dortmund overcome the humiliating league summit against FC Bayern (0:4) just three days earlier.

"I'm very pleased that we didn't fall into a hole and mess up a lot of things this season due to a bad phase," said scorer Julian Brandt (79), who was named "Man of the Match", commenting on the deserved success. As in the 1-0 win against the English side two weeks earlier, BVB were again the better team. "It was a very good performance from back to front," said Brandt.

Kehl: "Delivered a really good statement"

Like the international, Sebastian Kehl also appeared to have been relieved of a heavy burden. "That was the right response. You can see what this team can do - even in this group. I think you have to revise some of the criticism we had to take on Saturday today," said the sporting director, referring to the fierce media scolding for Dortmund following the game against Munich. "We made a really good statement with two wins against Newcastle."

After a weak start to the particularly difficult Group F against Paris (0:2) and AC Milan (0:0), coach Edin Terzic's team secured a promising starting position in the battle for the round of 16 thanks to Niclas Füllkrug's first Champions League goal (26) and Brand's counter-attacking strike.

Because Paris (6 points) lost 2-1 at Milan (5) a few hours later, BVB (7) even took the lead in the table. "Considering that many had already written us off after two games, things are looking pretty good now," said Brandt. Kehl is also confident that the Bundesliga fourth-placed team will make it through the winter in the top flight: "We've got it in our own hands now and we don't want to let it get away from us."

After the thrilling 2:0 victory over Newcastle United, Borussia Dortmund's Julian Brandt expressed his satisfaction, stating, "I'm glad we didn't sink into a rut and ruin a significant portion of this season with a poor spell." In the Champions League, Brandt's stellar performance against Newcastle United was once again evident, helping his team secure a crucial win.
