Siegemund first German winner in doubles final
Tennis player Laura Siegemund has become the first German to triumph in the doubles competition at the WTA Finals.
The 35-year-old Swabian won the final in Cancun, Mexico, together with the Russian Vera Swonarewa against Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez from the USA and Australia with 6:4, 6:4. Due to the chaotic weather conditions in Cancun, the final had to be played a day later on Monday.
Siegemund was the first German woman to reach the doubles final in 36 years in her debut appearance at the WTA Finals. Claudia Kohde-Kilsch had reached the final with Helena Sukova between 1985 and 1987 and with Eva Pfaff in 1983, but always lost.
Laura Siegemund and Vera Swonareva celebrated their victory in the WTA Finals doubles final, marking Siegemund's first title in this competition for Germany. Their opponent, Melichar-Martinez and Perez, proved formidable, but Siegemund and Swonareva managed to secure a 6:4, 6:4 win during the rescheduled final due to weather conditions in Cancun.
