Shot goes off in the hotel: World champion is excluded
A shot is fired at the Norwegian biathletes' team hotel in Switzerland. Fortunately, no one is injured. Sturla Holm Laegreid is punished for the dangerous incident. The shocked Norwegian apologizes immediately. Nevertheless, the authorities investigate.
Olympic relay champion Sturla Holm Laegreid is not allowed to compete in the final race of the Biathlon World Cup in Lenzerheide after an incident with his weapon. According to the IBU, a shot was accidentally fired during dry training in the team's accommodation in Switzerland.
This is a clear violation of the strict safety rules, which was immediately penalized by the IBU and the competition jury. As a result, the five-time World Champion will not be competing in the mass start on Sunday (14:45/ZDF and Eurosport). No injuries were reported.
"I am deeply sorry for this incident and I sincerely apologize to the entire biathlon family, my teammates and the hotel owner for what happened," Laegreid said in a federation statement: "This is a brutal reminder for me and all biathletes of how important safety routines really are." Laegreid had finished third in the pursuit race on Saturday.
The incident occurred on Friday, as Laegreid told the Norwegian newspaper "VG". He had mistakenly used a full magazine for dry training, normally an empty one is used for this, otherwise the small-caliber weapons cannot be used. Laegreid shot a hole in a stool on the wall, nothing more happened, he said.
The Norwegians reported the dangerous faux pas themselves and were praised by the IBU for their "responsible behavior". The case is now also being investigated by the authorities in Switzerland, and Leagreid has already been questioned by the police. The Norwegian federation announced that it is examining whether there could be further consequences.

Despite the incident leading to his disqualification from the mass start, Sturla Holm Laegreid still had a strong showing in the Biathlon World Cup, finishing third in the pursuit race. Regardless of the wintry conditions, Laegreid and his fellow biathletes never forgot the importance of safety, as winter sports like biathlon often require careful handling of equipment.
