Former First Lady Michelle Obama's mother passed away on Friday. The family shared the news with NBC News. Marian Robinson was 86 years old. The family's statement read, "She's gone peacefully this morning, and we're not quite sure how to carry on without her."

When Michelle Obama and her husband, Barack Obama, moved into the White House following the 2008 election, Marian Robinson joined them. "We needed her, the girls needed her, and in the end, she was our stronghold in the midst of chaos," the family said. "She relished her role as a grandmother. Although she strictly adhered to the family rules we set for bedtime, TV, and sweets, she made it clear that she was a supporter of her grandchildren when she believed their parents were too stringent."

The statement was shared by Michelle and Barack Obama, Michelle's brother Craig Robinson and his wife Kelly, and Marian Robinson's grandchildren, Avery, Leslie, Malia, Sasha, Austin, and Aaron.

In addition, Michelle Obama made an emotional post on her Instagram account about her mother. "My mom, Marian Robinson, was my rock whenever things got tough," she wrote. "The same unwavering support was also there for our entire family, and we are devastated that she is gone."

President Obama also expressed his condolences in a separate statement. "There will never be another Marian Robinson. In our pain, we will be comforted by the incredible gift of her life. We will devote the rest of our lives to carrying on her legacy," the former president tweeted.

Michelle Obama's dad, Fraser Robinson, passed away in 1991.
