The Royal Duchess Meghan... - She expresses gratitude following her journey to Nigeria.

Meghan Markle (42), the Duchess of Sussex, recently penned a letter of gratitude to the Yoruba King Oluwo of Iwo for his warm welcome during their visit to Nigeria in May. In the letter, she expressed her gratitude for being welcomed as if they were royalty and the bestowal of her new Nigerian name, Adetokunbo, which means "the crown from a foreign land."

Yoruba King's Post Reveals the Letter

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex paid a visit to Nigeria in May at the invitation of the Nigerian military for a three-day tour, where they received a warm reception. The couple also had the delight of meeting the Yoruba King Oluwo of Iwo, who gifted the Duchess with a Yoruba name during their time there. Meghan learned of her African roots, which sparked her curiosity and desire to learn more about her heritage.

On May 23rd, Meghan wrote a personal letter to King Oluwo to express her heartfelt thanks for their hospitality. The king, who is the only Yoruba monarch invited to an event with the Duke and Duchess, decided to share the heartwarming message on his Instagram page.

Her letter read, "I am deeply grateful for your warm welcome in Nigeria. I'm honored and humbled by your bestowal of the traditional Yoruba name of Adetokunbo. I take immense pride in carrying your trust in my actions moving forward. Our visit to Nigeria was crucial for various reasons, including understanding our Nigerian roots and the connection it has to our children." The Duchess also added, "We look forward to returning home."

While in Nigeria, Meghan thanked the people for welcoming her in her country and took the opportunity to support the Invictus Games, an event she and Prince Harry founded. They also met the Nigerian team and General Musa at the 2023 event in Dusseldorf. The Nigerian military lauded the Invictus Games as a possible way to aid in the recovery of over 1,000 soldiers who have been combating Boko Haram and its factions since 2009. Amidst their visit, the Sussexes signed a partnership agreement with the Geanco Foundation, a Nigerian charity that promotes maternal health and offers scholarships to female victims of terrorism.

After discovering her link to Nigeria through a genealogy test, the Duchess quickly contacted her mother to share the unexpected news. The royal couple's visit to Nigeria primarily aimed to support the Invictus Games.
