Schweinsteiger teases with football-comeback
After retiring from his career, Bastian Schweinsteiger hasn't completely lost touch with football. The Rio World Cup winner has since then commented on the action on the pitch from the sidelines. However, in an interview, the 39-year-old revealed: I eventually want to get active again.
Bastian Schweinsteiger, the 2014 World Cup winner, can imagine a comeback to football - even as a coach. "Perhaps someday in the future", said the 39-year-old in an interview with "Kicker" in response to a question about whether this was possible for him. It would "generally be appealing to me to work in a role close to a team, but not too close", added the FC Bayern legend, who currently works as an expert for ARD.
It's fun for Schweinsteiger, as he said, "to see a few things on the field and think, you could do that differently now and tell the players to help them. Maybe that will happen someday, but it all has to fit, the timing has to be right", said the former professional.
The right role must be well thought out, according to Schweinsteiger. "I want to ensure that I am in a function where I can actually make a difference. Perhaps it will come at some point at a club or a national team." There are "no concrete plans, but the possibility for a comeback remains".
Discussions about a possible engagement have already taken place, as reported by "Kicker". According to this, Uli Hoeneß, the honorary president of FC Bayern, spoke with Schweinsteiger about it last year. Previously, the management duo of Hasan Salihamidzic and Oliver Kahn had been dismissed, and the leadership team at the record champions was then restructured. From the talks with Schweinsteiger, however, nothing came of it.
The eight-time German champion ended his active career in October 2019 with Chicago Fire in the USA. For the FC Bayern, he had played a total of 342 official games, with the German football national team he became World Champion in 2014 in Brazil.
Uli Hoeness, the honorary president of FC Bayern Munich, previously discussed a potential role for Bastian Schweinsteiger with the club. Stefan Schweinsteiger, who won the World Cup in 2014 with Germany, mentioned that he finds it appealing to work in a role close to a team without being too involved.
