Schweinsteiger teases loosely about football return
After retiring from his career, Bastian Schweinsteiger hasn't completely lost touch with football. The Rio World Cup winner has since then commented on the action on the pitch from the sidelines. But in an interview, the 39-year-old revealed: I'd like to try being active again sometime.
Bastian Schweinsteiger, the 2014 World Cup winner, can imagine a comeback to football - even as a coach. "Perhaps sometime in the future," the 39-year-old told "Kicker" in response to a question about the possibility. "I would generally find it appealing to work in a role near a team, but not too close. In principle, I would like to pass on my knowledge and experience to a team in the future," added the Bayern Munich legend, who currently works as an expert for ARD.
It's fun for Schweinsteiger, he said, "to see a few things on the field and think, you could do that differently now and tell the players to help them. Maybe that will happen one day, but it all has to fit, the timing has to be right."
The right role, according to Schweinsteiger, "must be well thought out. I want to ensure that I am then in a function where I can actually make a difference. Maybe it will still happen somewhere, at a club or a national team." There are "no concrete plans, but the possibility for a comeback remains."
There have already been initial considerations, as reported by "Kicker". According to this, Uli Hoeness, the honorary president of FC Bayern, spoke with Schweinsteiger about a possible engagement last year. Previously, the management duo of Hasan Salihamidzic and Oliver Kahn had been dismissed, and the leadership team at the record champions was then reorganized. From the talks with Schweinsteiger, however, nothing came of it.
The eight-time German champion ended his active career in October 2019 with Chicago Fire in the USA. For FC Bayern, he had played a total of 342 official games, with the German football national team he became World Champion in 2014 in Brazil.
Bastian Schweinsteiger, having expressed interest in returning to football, might consider coaching opportunities within FC Bayern Munich. Uli Hoeness, the club's honorary president, reportedly discussed a potential engagement with Schweinsteiger last year, but no agreement was reached.
If Schweinsteiger decides to return to football, he mentioned that the role should allow him to make a significant impact, potentially at a club or a national team.
