people - Schumacher delightes in Formula 1's echo on Coming-out
Former Formula-1 driver Ralf Schumacher expressed delight in a podcast about the reactions of Formula 1 drivers and team bosses to his coming-out. "I must say, it was nice to see how it worked in Formula 1, with an immense amount of respect," said the 49-year-old in the Sky podcast "Hardenacke meets ..." over the weekend. "That was really nice to see," Schumacher added.
When asked if he had a message, he replied: "It's all about egoistically Etienne and me. That it's clear and clear who the Partner is on my side, so I can live normally."
Hamilton spoke out for Schumacher
Schumacher revealed his homosexuality in the middle of July by appearing arm in arm with a man in an Instagram post. "The best thing in life is having the right partner by your side, with whom you can share everything," wrote the brother of Formula-1 record world champion Michael Schumacher.
Following this, there were messages of support from, among others, British Formula-1 record world champion Lewis Hamilton and two-time world champion Fernando Alonso from Spain. Hamilton described Schumacher's decision to make his homosexuality public as a "positive message" for Formula 1. The driver known for his fight for equality and diversity urged, however, that the Formula 1 royalty still had a lot more to do. Alonso said: "It's great that he feels good and we're happy with him."
Schumacher was also successful as a racing driver himself. He started in 180 Formula-1 races, six of which he finished as the winner. Later, he became involved in junior racing series as a team manager and helped foster the career of his son David. Ralf Schumacher was married to Cora Schumacher, the pair have been separated for many years.
The former Formula-1 driver has been regularly employed as a TV expert for the pay-TV broadcaster Sky since 2019 and accompanies the Formula 1 royalty on their world tour every year.
