Basketball National Team - Schroder gets flag-bearer tips from Nowitzki

Flag bearer candidate Dennis Schröder exchanged places with basketball superstar Dirk Nowitzki before the Olympics in Paris. "He said it was one of the greatest things he had ever done," Schröder said at a press conference in Berlin: "Dirk only told positive things. He said it would change your life."

Nowitzki, who won the NBA championship with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011 and carried the flag for the German team at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, said: "I'm most looking forward to the opening ceremony."

One day later, the German team has an opening match against Japan scheduled in Lille. Nevertheless, Schröder, who is 30 years old, wants to be there for the opening ceremony. "You should enjoy it. It's all very positive things," Schröder said a week before the start of the games in France.

Schröder: "It would be good for my family"

The point guard is one of three German candidates for the role of flag bearer. Whether Schröder, tennis player Alexander Zverev, or sports shoe designer Christian Reitz will take the job will be announced on the coming Thursday. "That would be a great sign," Schröder said about a possible selection: "That would also be good for my family and generally for all parents of foreign descent. We can also achieve a lot."

On Friday (8:00 pm/MagentaSport), the German national team tests Japan in Berlin. The women also play a country match against Nigeria beforehand.
