Schalke moves away from veteran players for "fresh stimuli"
Schalke is moving away from its past as it focuses on rebuilding for the future. Following Gerald Asamoah's departure, another club legend, Mike Büskens, has been released by the struggling team. The second division soccer club is now focusing on "long-term goals," with everything else coming secondary.
FC Schalke 04 has said goodbye to another legendary player as it works towards rebuilding. After Asamoah, Büskens no longer has a future in Gelsenkirchen, with the club making the announcement. His contract expired at the end of this season and will not be renewed.
Schalke's CEO Matthias Tillmann issued a statement expressing gratitude for Büskens' work with the club:
"Büskens has enjoyed many memorable years as a player and coach with S04, most recently overseeing the 2021/2022 promotion team. We're incredibly thankful for the work he's done in his various roles."
This move is part of "deep-seated changes at the performance center," according to the club's announcement. In addition to Büskens, goalkeeping coach Simon Henzler and several unnamed employees will also be leaving.
In order to reach their long-term objectives, including a return to the Bundesliga, Schalke believes significant alterations are necessary to provide the required momentum. Tillmann told of these changes in sports management by signing Ben Manga and now continues to reshape other areas of the licensed sector.
Manga will now focus on squad planning, scouting, and the youth department at Schalke. Prior to parting ways with Büskens, Schalke had already let go of Mathias Schober. As of April 1st, former Bundesliga player Raffael Tonello took over as head of the youth academy and top talent scout. He will work closely with sporting director Marc Wilmots.
