Schalke 04 wins after an eternal interruption
FC Schalke 04 secure an important victory in the 2nd Bundesliga, but the basement duel at Hansa Rostock will still have an aftermath after a long interruption. Holstein Kiel celebrate three points in the fight for promotion.
Hansa Rostock - FC Schalke 04 0:2 (0:0)
Overshadowed by fan rioting in the stands and a lengthy interruption to the game, Schalke 04 gained further breathing space and moved out of the relegation places with another win against a direct rival in the basement of the Bundesliga 2. The team of coach Karel Geraerts won 2:0 (0:0) in a heated game at Hansa Rostock and moved past the North Germans to 13th place, while Hansa dropped to 16th in the table.
Blendi Idrizi (72') with his first goal of the season and Kenan Karaman (86') scored for the visitors in front of 27,215 fans at the Ostseestadion. The relegated Bundesliga side thus picked up another important point nine days after their 4-0 home win against bottom club VfL Osnabrück.
The ball had only been rolling for just under four minutes before both teams had to pause again: A fire was lit in the stands and clouds of smoke drifted across the pitch. After a brief interruption, the match continued, but referee Nicolas Winter intervened again a few minutes before the break: The police had to intervene after the fan groups had started shouting in the stands. The referee temporarily sent both teams to the dressing rooms. "The match will remain suspended until further notice due to safety concerns", a stadium announcement read. The game was only resumed after more than 25 minutes.
There had previously been no flow of play and no significant scoring chances on the pitch, with the game dominated by duels. Immediately before the restart, Winter then showed Rostock's Junior Brumado (45.+24) a red card after video evidence. The Brazilian had initially only been shown a yellow card after elbowing Idrizi (40').
Schalke's Tobias Mohr (45.+36) then hit the crossbar with the last action of the first half, after the break the visitors established themselves in Rostock's half in superior numbers - and celebrated thanks to Idrizi and Karaman.
Fortuna Düsseldorf - Holstein Kiel 0:1 (0:1)
Holstein Kiel drew level on points with league leaders FC St. Pauli. The runners-up won the top match at rivals Fortuna Düsseldorf 1:0 (1:0) and have now also collected 32 points after 16 games. Lewis Holtby scored the goal for the sixth away win for the visitors in the 18th minute. Fortuna suffered their third home defeat and are fifth in the table, five points behind Kiel.
The hosts did not get off to a good start in front of 31,042 spectators in the Düsseldorf EM-Arena. Although the red card for foul play against Düsseldorf's Felix Klaus was converted into a yellow card after a video check in the eleventh minute, Holtby scored seven minutes later to make it 1-0 for Kiel. Fortuna only got into the game late on in a moderate match and were unlucky that Yannik Engelhardt only hit the crossbar (74th minute). Kiel's Fiete Arp even missed the 2:0 on a counter-attack.
SV Elversberg - 1. FC Nürnberg 0:1 (0:0)
1. FC Nürnberg have ended their minor results crisis and have their sights set on the extended top flight once again. After three recent defeats in competitive matches, the "Club" won 1:0 (0:0) at SV Elversberg and now has 24 points to its name. Daichi Hayashi scored the winner for the Franconians in the 83rd minute.
Both teams largely neutralized each other and initially played harmlessly. The biggest excitement in the first half came from the Nuremberg fans, who threw objects such as rolls of paper onto the pitch and also hit "Club" goalkeeper Christian Mathenia on the head. However, the 31-year-old was able to continue playing without any problems. In stoppage time, the visitors had an unexpected chance to take the lead. Benjamin Goller suddenly had a clear run after a defensive error by the promoted team, but his lob only landed on the top edge of the crossbar.
After the changeover, the home side played more courageously going forward and created their first opportunities. Luca Schnellbacher hit the crossbar with a lob. Shortly afterwards, Semih Sahin and Paul Stock both failed to score against Mathenia, who reacted well but then limped off the pitch injured after 68 minutes. Carl Klaus replaced him between the posts. Nuremberg got into the game better in the final phase and won through Hayashi. The Japanese player scored from close range after an assist from Jan Gyamerah.
