Schalke 04 once again fails to bring home the win
With a win against SpVgg Greuther Fürth, FC Schalke 04 could jump into a secure mid-table position in the league. For a long time, it looked like the third success in a row, but then everything went wrong again. With only ten men at the end, they at least secured a point.
Schalke 04 missed out on a conciliatory end to a disappointing year with Bundesliga relegation and a false start in the second division. The Royal Blues had to settle for a 2:2 (1:0) draw against SpVgg Greuther Fürth at the end of the first half of the season despite twice taking the lead and remain close to the relegation zone. The Franconians, who remained unbeaten for the seventh time in a row, climbed to third place.
Keke Topp gave Schalke the lead for the first time with his first professional goal (30'). The 19-year-old had only made the starting eleven following the injury to striker Bryan Lasme - for only the second time in his career. Branimir Hrgota equalized shortly after the break (50'). After Kenan Karaman's header to make it 2:1 (74'), Simon Asta (77') rescued a point for the visitors. The Gelsenkirchen side had to survive the final phase outnumbered after Derry Murkin was shown a yellow card for a repeated foul (80').
Schalke fans do not take part in protests
Topp had Schalke's first chance as early as the seventh minute when he failed to beat goalkeeper Jonas Urbig from close range (7'). His goal was preceded by a long pass from Blendi Idrizi, who, like Topp, is only making his first appearance under new coach Karel Geraerts.
The big chance to make it 2:0 was missed by second division record goalscorer Simon Terodde, who shot over the bar from the penalty spot (43'). Just two minutes later, Tobias Mohr failed to beat Urbig. Fürth dominated after the break: First Armindo Sieb hit the post (47'), then Hrgota equalized. Mohr was asleep at 2:2, not knocking the ball away but leaving it to Asta.
The Schalke fans cheered their team on from the very first minute. The royal blue fans decided against the announced twelve-minute boycott in protest against the controversial investor deal. Their club had voted in favor of the entry of a financial backer - because they hoped it would lead to a different distribution of TV money.

Despite the draw, a win against SpVgg Greuther Fürth could have seen FC Schalke 04 move up to a more comfortable position in Bundesliga 2. Even with ten men toward the end of the match, they managed to salvage a point. In the same Bundesliga 2 soccer context, a victory for SpVgg Greuther Fürth against FC Schalke 04 would have further solidified their position as a contender, potentially pushing them closer to promotion.
