Sandro Wagner is said to be highly sought after, DFB reacts immediately

Sandro Wagner is an important assistant to Bundestrainer Nagelsmann. He is particularly valuable for handling emotions, but not only that. This apparently piques the interest of several clubs. At the DFB, they are certain that the former national player will stay.

According to a report in the "Bild" newspaper, Sandro Wagner is a chief candidate for head coach positions at several domestic and foreign clubs. The 36-year-old reportedly caught the attention of these clubs through his work as a co-trainer for the German national team during the European Championship at home. However, from DFB circles, it was immediately reported that Wagner would be handling the upcoming tasks in the Nations League and the qualification for the 2026 World Cup with Nagelsmann.

The contract of the former national player and Bayern professional was extended, like those of Nagelsmann's other assistants, just before the EM for two years until the tournament in America. Nagelsmann praised Wagner explicitly in his EM closing press conference. It was also Wagner's idea to encourage Toni Kroos to make a comeback for the DFB. In contrast, Wagner has more professional football experience than Nagelsmann.

"I know how a cabin functions, but not at this level, I haven't played at this level or under these emotional pressures. That's why Sandro Wagner is in the trainer team. He has played in the national team and in the Champions League. It's important to know how players feel in certain situations and in certain roles," Nagelsmann said in Herzogenaurach. Wagner sat there like Nagelsmann's other assistant Benjamin Glück in the media room and listened attentively.

Wagner had achieved his greatest coaching success with the SpVgg Unterhaching, promoting them to the 3. Liga in the summer of 2023. After that, he went to the DFB and was initially an assistant in the youth sector. Nagelsmann took him into his trainer team after Völler had brought the former striker to the A-Team after Flick's dismissal in the previous September.

Sandro Wagner's experience with the German national soccer team, including his role during the European Football Championship 2024, has made him a sought-after candidate for head coach positions at various clubs. Despite this interest, the DFB is confident that Wagner will continue his work with Julian Nagelsmann, their assistant coach, for the Nations League and the qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
