I come from Europe. - Sandra Hüller urges individuals to cast their votes during the protest.
Actress Sandra Hüller (46) surprisingly joined a protest against right-wing extremism and for democracy in Leipzig on Saturday. "Typically, I like to keep a low profile when I'm not working, but not today," she said. The demonstration was organized by a coalition of over 200 organizations under the slogan "Hand in Hand for Democracy and Human Rights." Hüller, who was nominated for an Oscar this year for her role in the film "Anatomy of a Case," was born in Suhl and lives in Leipzig.
She couldn't recall a time when she felt the ideals of this society, such as openness, mobility, friendliness, and reliability, were more under threat than now. "I prefer to say 'seem,' because I won't allow myself or you to believe it's true," she told the thousands gathered in Leipzig. The organizers estimated around 15,000 people, while the police put the number at a high four-digit figure.
Leipzig's Mayor Burkhard Jung had asked Hüller to speak at the rally a few days before it took place. "I asked if she'd consider addressing the crowd from the stage," said the SPD politican to the German Press Agency. "With her as a great, shining actress, her voice would be a unique and exciting addition." A few days later, she agreed to do it.
"I am European," the rarely-public person shouted to the sea of people. "Don't let yourselves be influenced by the brutal tone of the right, by the inaccuracies and the violence in their language, which aims to create insecurity and discord." There's no simple solution. "Democracy, shared decision-making, and critical thinking take effort," she urged. "Go and vote on Sunday, and also bring your friends and family."
