EM 2024 - Romanians leave a touching farewell message
Naturally, the Romanians were dejected after they were knocked out of the UEFA Euro 2024 quarter-finals against the Netherlands on a Tuesday. Nevertheless, it was still a great achievement for the team to have made it that far. And so, with heads held high, they left the stadium – and Germany as the host nation. However, they didn't leave without bidding farewell.
In their dressing room at the Munich Arena, they left a message that UEFA published on X, formerly Twitter, on a Wednesday.
EURO 2024: Romania thanks Germany
In this message, the national team expressed their gratitude to their hosts for making them feel at home. "The European Championship was one of the most significant football experiences in our history, and we are glad that it was Germany that provided the stage for it." The team left Germany knowing, "we have given everything for Romania and are grateful for everything we have experienced here."
Romania surprised everyone by finishing first in Group E in the group stage, leaving the favorites Belgium behind and defeating Ukraine very clearly in the first match with a 3:0 score. Following that, there was a draw and a loss. The football played by the team coached by Edward Iordănescu was unusually offensive for an underdog, and even in the quarter-finals against the Netherlands, the team refused to back down despite clear underdog status and held their own better than expected. Two goals from the Dutch were scored only in the final phase.
The Romanians stayed in Würzburg during the EURO. "Thank you for fantastic games and for bringing so much EURO atmosphere into the city," the city wrote on its website.
