"Gladiator II" - Rhino action in the first trailer

Paramount Pictures has recently released the first moving images for "Gladiator II" - now the first trailers are here. The film distributor has nearly four months before the cinema release made the first trailer for the much-anticipated historical spectacle by Ridley Scott (86) available. And the clip keeps the promise of the action-packed images.

At the start of the trailer, there's a surprise - Russell Crowe (60) is seen. Of course, only in the form of a flashback, as his Maximus died in the predecessor from 2000. His brief appearance in archival images is noteworthy, as Crowe had repeatedly stated that he wouldn't be in the sequel. Connie Nielsen (59) appears as Maximus' aged enemy Lucilla, which was already known.

Crowe's successor Paul Mescal (28) is seen looking at Maximus' sword on the wall. He had to watch the murder of his hero Maximus by his uncle years ago. The young Lucius from "Gladiator" is also seen in the trailer in the form of flashbacks. He had fled from Rome as a young boy and is now returning. He lets himself be trained as a gladiator by Macrinus (Denzel Washington, 69). Washington is relatively frequent in the trailer, indicating a significant role in the film.

Rhinos and Sea Battles: More Action Than in "Gladiator"

How do you top a film that started the revival of the sandal epics almost 25 years ago? The answer seems to be more action, as indicated by the teaser. Instead of a tiger like in part one, the gladiators face a fully grown rhinoceros in the arena.

The Colosseum is flooded to let the fighters stage a naval battle. But real sea battles are also suggested by the trailer. Elsewhere, we see a burly Pedro Pascal (49), the "Mandalorian" star, dueling with Paul Mescal.

Criticism of the Rap Song in the "Gladiator II" Teaser

The potential audience is excited, with over 5,000 likes on YouTube within a good half hour of the trailer being released. Criticism is expressed in the comments about the music of the teaser. In addition to classical orchestral sounds, the rap song "No Church in the Wild" by Jay-Z (54) and Kanye West (47) can be heard.

"Gladiator II" is scheduled to come to German cinemas on November 14, 2024.
