Report: Mats Hummels needs to depart from Borussia Dortmund
Following coach Edin Terzic's departure from Borussia Dortmund, Mats Hummels has decided to follow suit. A report claims that the defense chief's contract will not be renewed, bringing an end to his 13-year tenure at the club. The executives are reportedly unhappy with his behavior.
The BVB management held a meeting in the morning at their headquarters in Brackel to discuss the season, and it didn't take long for the BVB to make a choice. With Terzic's confirmation of his departure in the afternoon, Hummels, 35, now has to find a new club. The "Ruhrnachrichten" reports that his contract with the defense chief will not be extended. Hummels played for BVB from 2008 to 2016 and then again since 2019, amounting to a 13-year stint overall.
Rumours had been circulating that either Terzic or Hummels would have to go. However, Terzic asked for the termination of his contract, which ran until 2025. The World Cup winner from Rio will now need to find a new team. The most probable reason for his departure is likely his conduct towards the BVB executives.
Hummels criticized Terzic after the loss in the DFB Cup against Stuttgart (0:2), as he made clear in a recent "Sport Bild" interview. Terzic himself later complained about Hummels' red card during the RB Leipzig game. The final straw appears to be Hummels' insistence on Terzic not being the coach anymore.
It appears that both are bidding farewell to the Schwarz-Gelben. In contrast to the other BVB legend leaving, Marco Reus, Hummels is unlikely to receive a warm goodbye. According to the Italian newspaper "Corriere della Sera," the Serie A club AS Roma has reached out to Hummels and offered him a two-year contract with an option for a third.
Meanwhile, Nuri Şahin is being considered as Terzic's successor. According to "Bild," only minor details need to be ironed out between the club and Şahin, who has been working as Terzic's assistant since then.

The BVB management's decision to not renew Mats Hummels' contract, as reported by "Ruhrnachrichten," leaves the veteran defender searching for a new club in the Soccer Bundesliga or elsewhere. Despite his poor conduct towards the club executives being a probable cause, Hummels' 13-year tenure with Borussia Dortmund, including two stints from 2008 to 2016 and 2019 onwards, has been marked by significant contributions to Soccer Bundesliga games and European Cup finals.
