Report: Künzer becomes DFB sports director
According to a media report, Nia Künzer is to fill the new position of sports director for the German women's soccer team at the DFB. The 43-year-old's appointment is imminent, reported "Bild".
According to the report, the former national player and ARD expert has already agreed to work for the association. This would mean that the women's national team would have its own manager, as Rudi Völler has been demanding for some time. The DFB has not confirmed the appointment. "No decision has been made yet," it said in response to an inquiry.
Künzer's area of responsibility would primarily include the management of the women's national team and the female youth team. In addition, she would first have to decide on the successor to interim national team coach Horst Hrubesch (72), who will be in charge of the national team until next summer at the latest.
Künzer celebrated her greatest success as a player in 2003. In the World Cup final in Carson (USA), she scored the golden goal against Sweden to make it 2-1. With 1. FFC Frankfurt, the defender also won the German championship and the DFB Cup seven times. She won the European Cup three times with the Hessians.
