Legendary Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani has shared that he's battling a serious illness. The 82-year-old opened up to Milan's daily newspaper "Corriere della Sera", revealing that following an urgent operation, he's currently undergoing unconventional treatment, with minimal prospects of recovery. "I'm essentially a test subject," Toscani stated, known globally for his groundbreaking advertising campaigns for Italian clothing brand Benetton in the 1980s.

Toscani is grappling with amyloidosis, which he explains as "proteins congregating at vital body locations, obstructing them, and eventual demise. There's no remedy."

Photos accompanying the interview suggest a considerable weight loss for Toscani. He confirmed, "I've shed around 88 pounds in a year. I can't even savor wine anymore: my palate has transformed due to the medication."

His illness was identified in the summer, and he also fell ill with pneumonia and Covid-19 in October. "I believe I momentarily expired: I remember something obscure with vibrant, hallucinogenic tones."

Regarding his fear of death, Toscani responded, "No, not if it's painless. Moreover, I've lived an excessive and lavish life. I've been pampered. I've never had a boss, nor received a paycheck. I've always been unrestrained."

Toscani was Benetton's primary photographer for over a decade and a half before their paths diverged. He frequently faced criticism for his model choices - anorexics, AIDS patients, condemned prisoners - for inciting controversy. After a brief reunion, the company severed ties with Toscani in 2020. He has additionally showcased his work extensively in Germany.

The photograph of Oliviero Toscani published with the interview shows a noticeable weight loss, reflecting his health battle. Despite his illness, Toscani shared that he's had to give up his beloved wine due to the medication's impact on his palate.
