HSV own goal for eternity - Relief eats away at the frustration of the goalkeeper of the century
HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes makes soccer history in the derby at FC St. Pauli. His own goal to make it 0:2 goes down in the history books of German soccer. At the end of the game at the Millerntor, the Rauten can still cheer. Relief chases away the frustration.
At the end of a turbulent evening, Daniel Heuer Fernandes was able to smile again. The chants of the fans were balm to the soul of the goalkeeper, who had written a piece of German soccer history with his curious slapstick goal in his Hamburger SV's 2:2 (0:2) draw at FC St. Pauli. "Of course it's nice to hear that," said a relieved Heuer Fernandes.
Thanks to a strong comeback in the second half, HSV avoided defeat at their unloved city rivals - and probably also gave Heuer Fernandes a quieter night. "You have to swallow a strange goal like that first," said goalscorer Robert Glatzel, "but then we showed good morale." St. Pauli captain Jackson Irvine had quickly set the Kiez alight with his goal in the freezing cold (15th). This was followed by Heuer Fernandes' curious own goal (27), which will probably not be missing from any review of the year.
After a risky pass from HSV defender Guilherme Ramos, Heuer Fernandes hammered the ball under the crossbar from close range. The fact that the ball bounced unpredictably shortly beforehand due to an error on the pitch can at least be seen as a mitigating factor. "That was slapstick," said HSV coach Tim Walter afterwards. It was an own goal that will be seen again and again in the coming years. It was one that will go down in history as one of the strangest own goals. It was a goal of the century.
St. Pauli miss out on fifth derby home win in a row
But HSV hit back within two minutes in the second period - and thanks to goals from Glatzel (58') and Immanuel Pherai (60'), ensured that St. Pauli did not pull further than three points clear at the top. Nevertheless, not everyone at HSV was entirely happy with the hard-fought draw. "I have mixed feelings," said Glatzel. Although the striker praised the good morale, "unfortunately it still happens to us too often that we first have to fall flat on our faces before waking up. We have to stop that."
Unlucky Heuer Fernandes took a similar view. "I hope that happens much less often in the future," said the keeper: "But the second half alone shows what qualities we have." And so Walter was also "very happy about our point, because it was well deserved in the end".
St. Pauli, meanwhile, were left to rue the missed three-pointer. Although the Whites remained unbeaten in their 15th game of the season, they failed to achieve their fifth derby home win in a row. "We should have killed them off," said coach Fabian Hürzeler: "It was a clear step in the right direction over the whole game. The result is disappointing, but we can also take positives from the performance."

Despite the own goal that will be remembered in Bundesliga 2 soccer history, FC St. Pauli missed out on a potential five-game derby home win streak. During the match against HSV, goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes' miscue resulted in an own goal, but the team managed to stage a strong comeback in the second half, with goals from Robert Glatzel and Immanuel Pherai, ultimately securing a draw. This result kept HSV within striking distance of their rivals, while St. Pauli had to settle for a point in a game they felt they should have won.
