- Record Olympic champions: wine for value and fishermen
The only German athletes with eight Olympic gold medals will soon raise a toast together. Dressage rider Isabell Werth will buy a drink for canoeist Birgit Fischer. "I've promised a wine," said Werth: "Birgit also enjoys a drink now and then."
Werth became Germany's most successful Olympian at the Paris Games. Her Olympic record now stands at eight gold and six silver medals. Canoeist Birgit Fischer is Germany's number two, having won eight Olympic gold and four silver medals. Strictly speaking, both are now tied as Germany's most successful Olympians.
"It's clear that we'd rather meet for dinner than coffee," Werth said with a grin. "We've met before. It was very pleasant and fun," the dressage rider recalled. And of the retired canoeist, she said: "I have great respect for her, and she's a wonderful person."
Whether Werth will continue and compete again in 2028 in Los Angeles is undecided. "I haven't thought about that yet," said the 55-year-old rider, who once referred to Paris as her "swansong." Her horse Wendy would be in her prime at 14 years old in LA.
Werth mentioned her love for socializing, stating, "I enjoy going to horse racing events occasionally." Being an avid fan, Fischer often joins her, and they both share a passion for the thrill of horse racing.
