RB boss sad about Max Eberl's short tenure

When Max Eberl joins RB Leipzig, he is praised as the new big mover and shaker at the Bundesliga club. But disillusionment followed quickly. Red Bull boss Oliver Mintzlaff now talks about his time in office, which lasted just a few months. He also sees some positives.

Red Bull boss Oliver Mintzlaff looks back with mixed feelings on the short tenure of former sports director Max Eberl at Bundesliga club RB Leipzig. "Looking back, I made a mistake," the supervisory board chairman of the DFB Cup winners admitted to "Sport Bild".

He was disappointed and sad, but not everything was bad. "On the positive side, we signed really great players in the summer of 2023, who were expensive but fit in extremely well with us." Eberl, who was released after just ten months, "immediately understood our transfer philosophy and how consistently we pursue it at RB Leipzig", emphasized Mintzlaff: "I am very grateful to him for that."

Mintzlaff had brought Eberl on board in December 2022 as Leipzig's managing director and CEO at the time, but his involvement was already over by the end of last September. "That's how the club communicated it when we parted ways, but of course you also need a commitment. And that was not sufficiently present, so the separation was logical." However, he and Eberl "did not part on bad terms". There had been "a sensible conversation", explained Mintzlaff: "I also told him that I was disappointed and sad."

Eberl has long been linked with FC Bayern Munich, where the 50-year-old is set to become the new sports director, according to the media. Nobody from Munich has contacted him yet, but he is also not the right person to talk to, according to Mintzlaff: "FC Bayern would have to contact the management of RB Leipzig for that. We have a good relationship with FC Bayern, but it's not the case that Jan-Christian Dreesen (Bayern's CEO; editor's note) updates me every day."

In its search for a successor to Eberl, RB has "learned from the mistakes of the past" and will not be rushed. As a club, they see a managing director of sport again "for the medium-term future".

RB Leipzig's signing spree during the summer of 2023, facilitated by Max Eberl, significantly strengthened their squad, even though his tenure as sports director was brief. The Soccer League club managed to secure several expensive yet well-suited players, showcasing Eberl's understanding and alignment with RB Leipzig's transfer philosophy.

Despite being linked with a move to FC Bayern Munich, Max Eberl's potential transfer is not in the hands of RB Leipzig's boss Oliver Mintzlaff, as the German powerhouse would need to approach RB Leipzig's management directly for any negotiations regarding his employment.
