Prominent handball player misses major victory in final match
FC Barcelona clinched the Champions League Handball title despite Mikkel Hansen's heroic efforts, as Aalborg succumbed to the Spanish giants. Despite scoring eight times, Hansen couldn't secure a first elite-class triumph in his final match for the Danish team.
No European glory in swan song: Hansen, a handball legend, fell short of winning his first Champions League victory in his final game for a club. On Sunday evening, the 36-year-old and Aalborg Handball were beaten by FC Barcelona 30:31 (15:15). This victory marked Barcelona's eleventh in the prestigious European team competition.
THW Kiel had finished third. Having lost a lopsided 18:30 against Barcelona in the semi-finals the previous day, they salvaged some pride by beating German rivals SC Magdeburg 32:28 (23:14). The three-time German champions had struggled against Aalborg, losing 26:28.
With an Olympic gold, three world championships, and a European Championship already under his belt, Hansen had accomplished almost everything during his lengthy career, which concludes this summer. He put his heart into securing the elite class champion title, but his dreams fell short.
Warm applause for Hansen
The 20,000 fans at the arena in Cologne eagerly anticipated the championship showdown, eager to witness Hansen's last game. Cheers erupted as the three-time world player of the year took the stage for the last time in the Champions League.
Barcelona started strongly in the title clash, surging to a 5:2 lead (8th minute). Hansen scored his first goal shortly after (9th minute). Then, Aalborg stayed close. After a remarkable save by ex-Kiel player Niklas Landin, Aalborg levelled the game for the first time at halftime (15:15).
In the second half, it was an intense, neck-and-neck battle. While Barcelona maintained the lead, Aalborg responded. In the 22nd minute, with a thrilling come-from-behind, Hansen leveled it at 26:26. A tense final phase ensued, with Barcelona ultimately emerging victorious. Hansen almost scored a winning penalty shot just before the end, but it wasn't to be.
