Prodigy kid: Russians cannot get Olympic Gold back
**Russia's Objection in the Wajewa Case Fails: The revoked gold medal for the figure skating team event at the 2022 Olympics remains with the USA. Both Russia and Canada filed objections against the scoring. The decision regarding the bronze medal is still pending.
After Kamila Wajewa's doping ban, Russia's objection against the new scoring in the figure skating team event at the 2022 Olympics has failed. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed the appeal. Therefore, the Russian team, which originally won gold in Beijing, will not get their previously taken away gold medal back. It is still undecided whether they will at least get the bronze medal, according to CAS.
After the team event, a positive doping test for figure skater Kamila Wajewa was announced. CAS subsequently suspended her for four years retroactively. Wajewa tested positive for the banned substance Trimetazidine at the national championships in December 2021. Her points in the Olympic team event 2022 were deducted, and the International Skating Union (ISU) demoted Russia from first to third place. Gold went to the USA, and silver to Japan.
The International Olympic Committee announced that the retroactive award ceremony for the medals will take place in cooperation with the National Olympic Committees of the USA and Japan at the Paris Games. "We are happy that we can offer this opportunity to the athletes and teams who had to wait so long for their medals due to the legal process," the IOC stated.
Both Russia and Canada filed objections. Regarding Canada's appeal, which aims to make Russia finish fourth and move Canada to the bronze position, CAS stated that it will be discussed further by a different panel. When a decision can be expected is currently unclear.
The United States of America maintains their gold medal in the figure skating team event at the Olympic Winter Games 2022, following Russia's failed objection against CAS's decision. Russia's doping scandal, involving figure skater Kamila Wajewa, led to their original gold medal being revoked. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland dismissed Russia's appeal, leaving the medal positions unchanged.
