Previously prosperous Bayern prodigy jolted Leverkusen
This Bundesliga stint had all the thrills for the favorites: Bayer Leverkusen easily bagged a 2:0 lead but succumbed to newcomers Holstein Kiel later on. Borussia Dortmund exceled in the Champions League but stumbled against Union Berlin in the league. No gains were made for Bochum and Bremen.
VfL Bochum - VfL Wolfsburg 1:3 (0:2)
Unfortunate before the international break: Bundesliga team VfL Bochum remains winless after the sixth matchday, suffering a 1:3 (0:2) defeat at home to VfL Wolfsburg. Peter Zeidler's Bochum squad now has only one point and is at the bottom of the table.
The Wolfsburg goals at the Ruhrstadion were courtesy of Tiago Tomas (21), ending his over a year-long goal drought, and Jonas Wind with a brace (37/88). Myron Boadu scored the temporary equalizer for Bochum (72). The decision came after a lengthy video review and a penalty for the guests, which Wind initially failed to beat goalkeeper Patrick Drewes only to score on the rebound.
Werder Bremen - SC Freiburg 0:1 (0:0)
Thanks to Ritsu Doan, SC Freiburg matched its best start yet. Coach Julian Schuster's team won 1:0 (0:0) away at Werder Bremen, achieving their fourth victory of the season. Doan scored the match-winning goal in the 75th minute, but the guests had previously failed to capitalize on their dominance. Bremen remained scoreless in their third home game of the season.
Four wins from the initial six games - this was previously achieved by Freiburg coach legend Christian Streich in 2019/20 and 2022/23. Under Schuster's management, Freiburg is now making its presence known in the higher echelons of the table, while Bremen still lacks a home victory, lingering in the middle of the table.
Bayer Leverkusen - Holstein Kiel 2:2 (2:1)
Bayer Leverkusen suffered an unlikely blunder against newcomers Holstein Kiel. Despite a 2:0 lead, the double champions inconveniently settled for a 2:2 (2:1) draw against the brave Bundesliga neophytes, relinquishing an opportunity for a win in their 100th game under coach Xabi Alonso.
In a one-sided game for most of the time, Victor Boniface (4) and Jonas Hofmann (8) put Leverkusen in the lead early on. However, Bayer then slowed down significantly and paid the price with a goal by Max Geschwill (45+5) before the break. Ex-Munich player Fiete Arp (69, penalty) flipped the script and orchestrated an upset. Bayern Munich can expand their lead over Leverkusen to five points on Sunday against Eintracht Frankfurt.
1. FC Union Berlin - Borussia Dortmund 2:1 (2:0)
Borussia Dortmund, after their goal-spree against Celtic Glasgow, was brought back down to earth, now missing their Champions League hero Karim Adeyemi. Four days after their outstanding 7:1 victory, the Sahin-led team suffered a 1:2 (0:2) defeat away to Union Berlin, still waiting for their first away win in the Bundesliga.
Kevin Vogt (26, penalty) and Yorbe Vertessen (45) scored for the Berliners, who remain undefeated at home this season. For Dortmund, Julian Ryerson (62), a former Union player, scored, but it was not enough. Over a large part of the match, the Dortmund team, without Adeyemi, appeared unremarkable in the attack. The 22-year-old had showcased his skills and three goals in the duel with Celtic, but ended up with a muscle injury.
After their impressive 2:0 lead, Bayer Leverkusen faced a surprising draw against 1.FC Union Berlin. This result allowed Borussia Dortmund's chance to close the gap, but they also suffered a 1:2 defeat at Union Berlin, further delaying their first away win in the Bundesliga.
