Predicting the teams moving forward to the Last 16 at the Euro Championships in Germany.
Heat's On, Third-Position Showdown, Equal Play: The EURO's Round of 16 race is heating up. Germany's team is in. But who else joins them? Let's discuss qualifying.
Who gets a ticket to the Round of 16?
It's straightforward: The top two finishers from each group, along with the top four third-place teams.
What deciding factors are in play when teams are tied on points?
If two teams are level, their head-to-head record determines the ranking. If that game ended in a draw, better goal difference and then total goals scored across all group stage matches will be considered. Next up is the Fair-Play ranking and qualifier results. For third-place teams, the head-to-head record is irrelevant (see below).
What happens when three or four teams are level?
In this scenario, the head-to-head record is employed, but first, matches involving the tied teams will be reviewed. If this doesn't resolve the ranking, the process will be repeated only for teams still tied. If the rankings are still unclear, all group stage matches will be considered, with goal difference taken into account first, followed by scored goals, Fair-Play ranking, and qualifier results.
How are the best third-place teams decided?
A table will be created for the six third-place teams, taking into account total points from all matches. In this table, higher point totals, better goal differences, more goals scored, more wins, Fair-Play ranking, and finally qualifier ranking will determine the order.
Is there a waiting game involved?
Definitely. If Groups A and B finish on Sunday, third-place teams may not know if they've qualified. In the worst-case scenario, they might not find out until Wednesday if they're going home.
What does "Fair-Play ranking" mean?
At the EURO, each team collects "penalty points" for Yellow Cards (one point), Yellow-Red Cards (three points, including the initial yellow card), and Red Cards (three points). The team with fewer points is deemed fairer and moves ahead.
How is the Round of 16 formed?
Four Round of 16 matches are pre-determined (e.g., Group A winner versus Group C runner-up). For the other four knockout stage matches, it's crucial which of the four best third place teams come from which groups. If, for instance, they're from Groups A, C, E, and F, they'll be distributed according to a pre-determined key.
