Power Golf: Introducing the GTI/Clubsport Edition

A few decades back, Volkswagen began an epic journey with the inception of the Golf. Now, to commemorate this momentous occasion, they've revamped their famous GTI. This updated version might make purists shed a few tears.

Back in 1975, when Volkswagen launched the first Golf GTI, its 110 PS in a mass-produced car seemed practically magical. Fast-forward five decades, and these numbers appear rather unimpressive. As a result, Volkswagen has cranked out an extra 20 horsepower for the facelift: instead of 180 kW/245 PS, the trusty 2.0-liter turbocharged engine (EA888) in its fourth iteration now pumps out 195 kW/265 PS.

Its speed also increases, with the compact icon flying from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds - a half second faster than before. However, the maximum torque (370 Nm) and peak speed (250 km/h) remain the same.

Sadly, manual transmission enthusiasts will be disappointed. The GTI's gear shifts are now solely managed by a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. This is also one of the reasons behind the hefty jump in base price - from €40,905 to €44,509.

Remodeled interiors and efficient infotainment

For many, the most exciting change might be the facelifted interior, which sees a remarkable upgrade in terms of quality. The infotainment system, too, operates smoothly and promptly.

Premium features like the famed GTI sports seats in the Carbon design with integrated headrests are still around. With their distinctive red stitching, you'll find them on the seats, sports steering wheel, floor mats, and center armrest. A neat touch: the start-stop button pulsates before the 4-cylinder engine starts running.

Despite the loss of the manual transmission, the driving thrill endures. Standard features include an electronically regulated front differential lock that enhances traction and handling, especially in turns. There's also an electronic differential lock XDS+ and a progressive steering. For a little more comfort and driving finesse, the adaptive chassis control DCC is available for an added cost.

Design enhancements

The visually refreshed GTI can be identified in the front by a new lighting arrangement featuring LED plus headlights and, for a premium fee, IQ.Light matrix headlights. Making a first in GTI history, the VW logo is now illuminated. The redesigned LED taillights are yet another addition. Also on offer are two sporty, yet not over-the-top, "real" exhaust systems.

The Golf GTI's more aggressive sibling - the GTI Clubsport - is still an option for those who demand more than 265 PS. Just like the standard GTI, this interpretation accepts all the changes made to the base model. However, its performance specs - 300 PS, 400 Newton meters, 5.6-second sprint time - remain the same.

Both the Golf GTI and the Clubsport are now ready for customization and can be ordered. The sporty compact car is set to reach dealers in July.

Details of the GTI's interior have been improved.
