Potocka collapsed in hospital - asthma as a cause?
In the swimming preliminaries of the Olympic Games, athletes and spectators alike experienced a shock moment. After completing her race, Slovakian swimmer Tamara Potocka suddenly collapsed by the poolside. Medical staff treated her and transported her to a hospital. Her coach explained how the incident occurred.
Slovakian swimmer Tamara Potocka collapsed after her race at the Olympic Games. The 21-year-old had to be treated by medics at the poolside. She was carried out of the arena on a stretcher, wearing an oxygen mask. She was conscious and receiving medical attention, a spokesperson for the La Défense Arena told Deutsche Presse-Agentur. Later, ARD reported that Potocka was "doing well given the circumstances."
The TASR news agency quoted the coach of the Slovak swimming team, Ivana Lange, as saying: "Tamara Potocka is asthmatic and suffered an asthma attack after swimming. She didn't have her asthma medication with her, which is why she collapsed." Lange also said: "She received oxygen and probably medication in the medical treatment room. She was responsive and communicating. She will now spend some time in the hospital for observation."
Potocka competed in the 200m individual medley preliminaries. She finished in 23rd place. It was her first-ever race at the Olympic Games.
