Portugal rises triumphant over Czech Republic at Euro 2024, thanks to Ronaldo's game-winning record-breaking performance.

In 2004, a 39-year-old player made his tournament introduction as Portugal lost to Greece in the final. He later guided his nation to victory at Euro 2016, his sole major trophy at the international level, although he was forced to exit the final in the first half following an injury.

Although currently playing outside of Europe’s top-five leagues (now with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia), Ronaldo was selected by Portugal coach Roberto Martinez who commended the experienced striker for his scoring abilities before the tournament.

Ronaldo kick-started Portugal's opening Group F encounter against Czech Republic, but his performance was rather subdued, with a late header off the post and a disallowed goal due to VAR for being offside serving as highlights.

Portugal persisted in searching for a winner, with substitute Francisco Conceição scoring a thrilling late goal in the 92nd minute, tapping in from close range.

Despite dominating the game, it was Czech Republic that opened the scoring through Lukáš Provod's remarkable long-range strike in the 62nd minute.

Just minutes later, Portugal equalized due to a stroke of enormous luck. Czech Republic goalkeeper Jindřich Staněk fumbled a routine cross, deflecting it off his own defender and rebounding into the goal via Robin Hranáč.

Ronaldo has netted in all five European Championships he's participated in and is the competition's top goalscorer with 14 goals. He stands a chance to become the eldest goalscorer at the Euros if he finds the back of the net in Germany this year.

Ronaldo wasn't the only Portuguese player to create history on Tuesday. Defender Pepe, at 41 and 113 days, became the eldest player to participate in a European Championships.

Portugal face Turkey in their next match on Saturday followed by a clash against Georgia next Wednesday.
