Team Sport: Handball - Portner doping case: League demands swift resolution

The doping drama involving Handball Bundesliga goalkeeper Nikola Portner from Magdeburg is set to reach its verdict by the end of June. Portner presented an extensive 80-page statement to the HBL, according to the local newspaper "Magdeburger Volksstimme."

Jurisconsult Andreas Thiel will evaluate this statement alongside the HBL, resulting in a judgment regarding the 30-year-old goalkeeper's fate. Outcomes ranging from exoneration to a four-year ban are imaginable.

"We understand the urgency regarding this matter," said HBL spokesperson Oliver Lücke to the newspaper. "It's vital for all parties, Nada, the player, Portner, and the club, to know the outcome promptly to make appropriate arrangements."

First Positive A and B Test Results:

On April 10th, during a random doping test by Nada of Portner, who played for the Champions League winner SC Magdeburg, a positive A-sample was detected. NADA identified the presence of methamphetamine in the test. Subsequently, Portner was suspended.

Thorough inspection of the B-sample certified the initial finding. In late April, the Magdeburg Public Prosecutor's Office ceased its criminal investigation on Portner. Nevertheless, this descision had no implications for the doping investigation.

Lawyer Rainer Tarek Cherkeh of SCM had previously stated that the measured concentration level was a small fraction of the standard dose of this substance. Additionally, he emphasized that, "There's no evidence supporting Portner's habitual use of methamphetamine within the months prior to the relevant doping test."
