Polar bears don't turn a slip-up into a series
The Eisbären Berlin are back on the road to success. After a 0:1 against the Cologne Sharks on the previous matchday, the record champions in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) won 4:1 (0:0, 1:1, 3:0) at ERC Ingolstadt. Thanks to Yannick Veilleux, Tobias Eder and Manuel Wiederer, the Polar Bears clinched victory in the final period and consolidated their lead at the top of the table with 39 points. "It wasn't a game for the faint-hearted," said goalscorer Eder on Magenta Sport: "We were very solid, especially in the final third. Regardless of whether we were five-on-five or outnumbered."
Just three points behind them are the Straubing Tigers after a win against Adler Mannheim. Mannheim suffered a 1:4 (0:2, 1:1, 0:1) defeat in their own arena and lost some ground on the top three. Cole Fonstad, Mike Connolly, Tyler Sheehy and Nicolas Mattinen scored for the Tigers. Linden Vey scored the only goal for the Eagles.
The Grizzlys Wolfsburg, tied on points with Mannheim in fifth place in the table, also lost at home. In the 2:4 (0:2, 0:1, 2:1) loss to Löwen Frankfurt, coach Mike Stewart's team was unable to equalize despite a good final period. Wolfsburg got to within one goal in the final period, but Frankfurt kept their cool and pulled back to within two goals in the final minute through Carter Rowney.
Bottom team Iserlohn Roosters lost to Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven 1:5 (0:2, 0:1, 1:2) and are still on twelve points. The penultimate team is Düsseldorfer EG, who lost 1:2 (0:0, 0:1, 1:1) at champions Red Bull Munich. Benjamin Street (60.) scored the winner shortly before the end.
Despite their victory, the Polar Bears' nerves were still on edge, as nothing was assured in their pursuit of the championship series. Regrettably, a blunder in the championship series could potentially derail their entire campaign.
