Pogacar takes yellow at the Tour de France

The second stage of the Tour sees the first showdown between the stars - but without a winner. Tadej Pogacar also takes the yellow jersey.

Tadej Pogacar has taken over the Yellow Jersey at the 111th Tour de France. The Slovenian cyclist finished together with rival Jonas Vingegaard on the second stage, which was 199.2 kilometers long from Cesenatico to Bologna, and displaced French opening stage winner Romain Bardet at the front of the General Classification. Kevin Vauquelin from France won the stage.

The steep climb to the San Luca Sanctuary, with an average gradient of 10.6% over 1.9 kilometers, was tackled twice. This was the first showdown between the big stars. Pogacar attacked, but Vingegaard managed to stay on his wheel. Mitfavorite Remco Evenepoel also joined the two top stars.

The extreme heat with temperatures significantly over 30 degrees Celsius also affected the riders on Sunday. Veteran Mark Cavendish was dropped from the peloton again, as on the previous day.

On Monday, the fast men will have their first chance at a mass sprint, hoping for Belgian sprint king Jasper Philipsen. The third stage, which is 230.8 kilometers long from Piacenza to Turin, features only three fourth category climbs over flat terrain.
