Pogacar claims victory in Giro time trial with outstanding swiftness.

Tadej Pogacar, the top cycling champion from Slovenia, shines at the first individual time trial of the Giro d'Italia and confirms his bid for a premier victory in Italy's premier cycling race. This talented cyclist clinches the win after a thrilling sprint on a mountain.

The highly favored Tadej Pogacar showcases an outstanding performance in the final climb of the 7th stage, lasting 40.6 kilometers, from Folgino to Perugia. He outperforms the former World Champion, Filippo Ganna from Italy, with an impressive finish. Meanwhile, the Berlin-based professional cyclist Maximilian Schachmann performs exceptionally well with a 5th place.

In the overall standings, Pogacar separates himself from the pack and increases his lead with his second stage victory during his first-ever Giro trip. At the young age of 25, he boasts a 2:26-minute lead over the Colombian Daniel Martínez, who pilots the German team Bora-hansgrohe. The Welshman Geraint Thomas, last year's second overall finisher, trails by 2:46 minutes.

Pogacar: "I gave it my all"

"I'm so happy that I felt good today," said Pogacar after his win, "I throttled back a bit until the climb and then pushed to the limit. I expected the climb to be more favorable to me than to Pippo (Ganna, ed.)."

Pogacar commenced the final six-kilometer climb with a 47-second deficit. It was clear from the start that his climbing prowess would likely surpass Ganna's, who weighed over 80 kilograms. Yet, it was a long shot for Pogacar to recover the deficit. Riding categorically up to Perugia, he raised his right fist in celebration as he crossed the finish line.

Saturday's peloton faces the second mountain finish. The 152-kilometer 8th stage culminates at Prati di Tivo, a popular tourist resort, with an altitude of 1451 meters. The final ascent, lasting almost 15 kilometers, features an average gradient of seven percent.
