"Please pick up": Granny's call makes DFB star Raum happy
At the EM quarterfinal win against Denmark, David Raum made his first start for the team. His grandparents likely watched the game from Saturday evening with a delay, as suggested by a video from the DFB camp.
When Grandma Rosi calls, David Raum says, "you don't hang up! Go there right away." So it was recently, as the German national player wanted to hang a German flag with his friend Joshua Kimmich in the EM quarters in Herzogenaurach. "I'll be called right now," Raum says in a video shared by the DFB, "that can't be important."
As soon as he recognizes his grandparents' number on his phone and Kimmich hears it, the Munich player tells the Leipzig player: "Very important, go there please!" Raum does as suggested. The brief conversation, which Raum summarizes with "I exchanged a few nice words with her," can be followed by everyone.
"Hi, Grandma! How are you doing?", Raum says with a very friendly tone, a tone that has helped him make many new friends on the internet. Raum learns during the phone call that his grandparents, who live nearby in Ebern, enjoy watching German EM games due to the sometimes late kick-off times. Raum assures them: "No, we're not leaving yet, we're good, we're a really good team."
Raum then asks if his grandparents would be watching again on Saturday. Intended was the quarterfinal game against Denmark, in which he scored the 2:0 win for Germany in Dortmund and was for the first time selected by national coach Julian Nagelsmann for the DFB starting lineup.
The family calls from Ebern, near the tournament quarters, Raum said on Monday, "always go well." It was "a huge joy" to exchange a few words with his grandma. That it had spread to all the people or the internet was a pleasant surprise. "It's nice that there's such positive feedback," Raum said.
And for all the fans out there, Raum had a special message. "Everyone who has the privilege of still having grandparents should take some time here and there to call them. It's nice to talk to the grandparents and to get positive energy."
