Basketball - Please a Tattoo: Schröder and Theis in Olympic Fever
An Olympic tattoo is missing from Daniel Theis' right thigh yet - this is set to change soon. "Olympic, an Olympic medal, there will definitely be room for that", announced the Brunswick native. The Basketball-Star proudly displayed the WM-Pokal on his taut right thigh during an interview with Magenta-TV. "That's right, that the trophy is there. That's a title that nobody can take away from us anymore. For me, that was something special."
Besides Basketball and family, tattoos are the great passion of the 32-year-old, who has now found a new club in his adopted homeland America. "The tattoo represents a tree of life that keeps the most important pillars in my life in front of me", he revealed once. Starting this season, Theis will play for the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA. After signing the contract, the 2.04-meter giant made his debut in this summer on a Saturday in Hamburg in a 95:50 test match victory against overwhelmed Dutch opponents.
Praise for Theis
Second-best scorer with 16 points behind birthday boy Andreas Obst (18/six threes) - and Man of the Match. "Daniel Theis showed us in his first game this summer how valuable he can be for us," explained National Coach Gordon Herbert.
"Daniel is one of the best centers from Europe. He's proven that for years in the NBA," says Franz Wagner of the Orlando Magic, who has recently become the best-paid German athlete. "His energy, both defensively and offensively, is always amazing," praises team captain Dennis Schröder his teammate.
Getting better
After the loss and the win against Olympic host France, Herbert tested his final Olympic squad before 10,137 spectators at the Barclays Arena. Except for the still recovering ex-Berliner Johannes Thiemann, all players were present. "That was another good game, but we have to get better," demanded Schröder. "We showed what we can do. Now we have to show against Japan and against the Americans that we can play and prepare as well as possible."
Besides the test match against the Olympic group stage opponent on Friday in Berlin, it goes against the star team of the USA with LeBron James on July 22 in London. "They checked last year that we can also play a little," knows Franz Wagner. "Of course, they're strong, as they also said last year. But that's just one team, there are still ten others. We have a good team and have a lot left in us."
Basketballers want to attend the opening ceremony
Whether the team's participation in the Olympic opening ceremony on July 26 is part of a good preparation is still to be seen. "We have decided as a team to go," announced Schröder.
However, less than 24 hours after the opening ceremony, it goes for the favorite into the first group match against Japan (July 27, 13.30 CEST) in the Metropol-Region Lille. In Group B, Brazil waits on July 30 and then the French. Then it will be shown how good the preparation was - and if Daniel Theis can still dream of a new tattoo.
