A New Hunger Games Movie in 2026

In a statement from Lionsgate, the film version of "Sunrise on the Reaping" is rumored to premiere on November 20th, 2026, as reported by entertainment industry magazine "Variety." Francis Lawrence (53), who has helmed the entire film series since the second installment, "Catching Fire," in 2013, is currently in negotiations to direct the upcoming project.

The Plot of "Sunrise on the Reaping"

The latest book delves into the 50th Hunger Games, which took place 24 years prior to the events centered around Katniss Everdeen. Collins' new story presents a different, more brutal version of the Games. In this edition, twice as many tributes enter the arena. One well-known character from the original series, Haymitch Abernathy, makes a comeback and participates in the 50th Hunger Games as well.

As such, "Sunrise on the Reaping" is essentially a prequel, much like the 2023 film "The Hunger Games - The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes." The fifth movie in the "Panem" series, which hit theaters in 2023, grossed over 337 million dollars globally on a reported budget of 100 million US dollars. The entire film series has amassed a remarkable total box office revenue of over 3.3 billion dollars.
