- Pharmacy commends Los Angeles for securing Olympic accolades
At the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, German athletes will see a significant increase in monetary rewards compared to previous Games. Alongside prizes from the German Sports Aid Foundation, drugstore chain Rossmann will offer additional cash awards. A first-place finish will earn 20,000 euros, a silver medal brings 15,000 euros, and a bronze medal is worth 10,000 euros.
The figures align with those provided by the German Sports Aid Foundation, but with an important twist: "If they bag two medals, they'll receive double the prize! Teams will obtain 100,000 euros per medal as a fixed sum," the firm announced.
"Elite sports ought to be lucrative"
"Elite sports should be profitable, and it's not just the federal government's duty, but ours as a society, too! I trust we can not only encourage athletes, but also inspire more enthusiasts," noted Raoul Roßmann, spokesperson for the company's leadership in Lower Saxony.
During the Paris Summer Games, German athletes voiced discontent with the existing awards, labeling them insufficient. Swimming world champion Angelina Köhler, who finished fourth in the 100m butterfly in France, commented on a TV show: "I believe it's unfair that 'Summer House of the Stars' contestants can pocket 50,000 euros, whereas gold medalists at the Olympic Games just receive 20,000 euros."
In preparation for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, German athletes are eagerly anticipating the increased monetary rewards, especially since they stand to earn double the prize money if they manage to win two medals. Despite participating in the Paris Summer Games, some German athletes expressed dissatisfaction with the existing award system, stating that gold medalists at the Olympic Games received less than contestants on reality TV shows.
