Pffiffe against Cucurella were 'silly' and 'taxing'

At every ball contact, Spanish football-National player Marc Cucurella was booed by German spectators during the EM-Halbfinal match between Spain and France (2:1) in Munich. EM-Tournament director Philipp Lahm has a clear opinion about this. The Spaniard remains unimpressed. He has been through this before.

EM-Tournament director Philipp Lahm criticizes the boos from German fans towards the Spanish football player Marc Cucurella as "stupid" and "annoying". "At first it was amusing", said the 40-year-old ex-national player to "Bild am Sonntag". "I eventually found the boos annoying."

Cucurella was booed at every ball contact in Munich during the EM-Halbfinal match between Spain and France. The reason being his handball in the extension of the Viertelfinal match against Germany, in which the German team was eliminated from the tournament.

"I found the boos exhausting throughout the game", said Lahm. "What was Cucurella supposed to do against Germany? Go to the referee and say: 'I played with my hand'?". He hopes, however, that the 25-year-old, who was mocked in the German press as "Zottel", took the boos with humor. "Because it was just a sign that the German pain in Munich was still deep", said Lahm, who became world champion with the national team in 2014.

Cucurella himself expressed little understanding for the boos. "Honestly, I didn't care. But at the same time, it felt a little sad that some people came to this game just to boo a single player", said the left-back of FC Chelsea to "The Athletic". "Some people wasted tickets that could have gone to fans who would have enjoyed the game."

The EM final participant showed himself otherwise unimpressed. He had been through this before, he said. "In a way, I got used to it when I came back to Chelsea in the Brighton jersey", he explained. "That was also an evening when the jeers were very loud every time I touched the ball. I wouldn't say that's an unbearable feeling, but it's unpleasant." Cucurella had switched from Brighton & Hove Albion to FC Chelsea for around 65 million Euros in 2022.

Philipp Lahm, the EURO 2024 tournament director, expresses his disapproval towards the boos directed towards Spanish footballer Marc Cucurella during the EURO 2024 Halbfinal match between Spain and France, stating that they were "stupid" and "annoying." Cucurella, who was previously booed by German spectators due to his handball in the extension of the Viertelfinal match against Germany, remains unphased and hopes that the boos were taken with humor.
