There have been whispers for a while now, but it seems like we finally have confirmation - Netflix has given the go-ahead for a "Peaky Blinders" movie starring Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy (48) in his iconic role as Birmingham gang leader Tommy Shelby. This was reported by the industry website "Deadline."

Cillian Murphy thrilled for "Peaky Blinders" film

As per reports, production is scheduled to start this year. Tom Harper, who directed the first season of the acclaimed series, is set to direct this as-yet-unnamed film. The script was written by "Peaky Blinders" creator Steven Knight (64). Apart from acting in the movie, Cillian Murphy will also be a producer. "It looks like Tommy Shelby isn't done with me," Deadline quoted the actor. "It's exciting to work with Steven Knight and Tom Harper again on the filming of Peaky Blinders. This is wonderful for the fans."

Back in March, Steven Knight told "Birmingham Mail" that they were planning to film the long-awaited movie this fall. No details on the storyline or additional casting have been revealed yet, but Knight had earlier teased that the action would take place during World War II.

"Peaky Blinders," which originally aired on BBC since 2013, became a global phenomenon. Set in Birmingham, the show centers around the Shelby family who lead the titular criminal gang, Peaky Blinders. The series starring Cillian Murphy, Paul Anderson (46), and Sophie Rundle (36) in the lead roles concluded with its sixth season in 2022.
