Only a draw: FC St. Pauli's increased demands against HSV

The own goal by HSV keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes makes the derby at FC St. Pauli special. Also the fact that his team salvaged a 2:2 draw. However, a completely different development is remarkable - for the opponent.

2nd league - Only a draw: FC St. Pauli's increased demands against HSV

HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes is the reason why the 110th Hamburg city derby will be remembered for a long time to come. His "slapstick" own goal (HSV coach Tim Walter) was another of the many special moments in the long history of the emotionally charged duel against FC St. Pauli. HSV fans will also remember that their team showed morale after trailing 2-0 at half-time and still managed to draw 2-2 with the 2nd Bundesliga leaders in a snowstorm.

For FC St. Pauli, however, the match against their big neighbors will remain remarkable because it showed how the Kiezclub's standards have risen within a year. "The fact that we are annoyed about a draw against HSV is a big thing for FC St. Pauli," said president Oke Göttlich on Saturday at a DFB event in the run-up to the European Championship draw. "We should have scored more goals," he continued, adding with a grin with regard to Heuer Fernandes' own goal: "So we had to rely on others."

St. Pauli's choice: "The result is disappointing"

The evening before, few of the players or coach Fabian Hürzeler felt like smiling. Disappointed, most of the St. Pauli professionals trudged past the media in the mixed zone. Those who spoke made no secret of their anger at the missed opportunity. After all, a win would have cut the team's lead over their rivals from Volkspark, seven kilometers away, to six points.

"We're very frustrated," said captain Jackson Irvine, who had put his team 1-0 in front after a quarter of an hour. "We have to accept the blame for not deciding the game earlier. The result is disappointing," agreed defender Hauke Wahl. "We dominated the game and were clearly the better team. That's why it's not satisfying that we only drew 2-2 today," said striker Johannes Eggestein.

For many years, a draw against the former Bundesliga dinosaur and one of the biggest clubs in German soccer was celebrated as a success for the local club. In the past four seasons, FC St. Pauli had always won their home games against HSV. However, the team had never gone into these games as favorites and victory was not a given. This time was different.

In fact, coach Hürzeler's team showed for a long time against HSV why it is currently highly praised by experts and has worked its way to the top of the table. "It's disappointing to come away with just one point after 90 dominant minutes," was Hürzeler's conclusion.

On the other hand: "When I look at the game as a whole, I see another step in the right direction," said the 30-year-old coach. "We played our game against the runners-up, were very dominant and, apart from the two goals we conceded, were also very compact in defense."

Such an own goal "happens in soccer"

However, the fact that it was only a draw was also due to the quality of the opponent - and their attitude. Coming back again after a weak first half and an own goal like that showed mentality. "You go into the dressing room and first ask yourself what the solution is," said coach Tim Walter, satisfied. "We have found it."

The discussion as to whether FC St. Pauli's goals were in accordance with the rules may be quickly forgotten. HSV sporting director Jonas Boldt complained on TV channel Sky about a foul by St. Pauli Karol Mets against HSV captain Jonas Meffert before the first goal for the hosts. Before the own goal, Eggestein and Elias Saad were allegedly standing on the penalty area line when Stephan Ambrosius' kick was intercepted by Guilherme Ramos and Heuer Fernandes.

Hürzeler reacted to the debate with incomprehension. "You can spin everything however you want," he said. There was a lot of "subjective perception" involved. HSV coach Walter said he had to look at the goals "in peace".

Heuer Fernandes will be able to look at his unbelievable miss again often enough, at the latest in the preliminary reports for the 111th derby at the beginning of May. "Of course it's extremely unfortunate. I had imagined it differently," said the 31-year-old about his first own goal in his 180th second division match. "But that happens in soccer."
