Susanne Daubner - Onion scandal because of
Susanne Daubner (63) laughed unintentionally during "Tagesthemen" on Thursday (25. July). The TV moderator was about to speak when a voice from off-camera interrupted. Daubner could no longer hide her laughter.
Cause was a colleague's blunder
"One day before the Olympic opening ceremony", a voice from behind started and noticeably surprised Daubner. She then read her text aloud herself, but this did not last long. She laughed again several times. "They won in Marseille against Australia", Daubner laughed, at the end she gave in to her laughter.
As a speaker of the broadcaster told the news portal "t-online", the voice from behind was Daubner's colleague Jessy Wellmer (44). The sports-focused moderator had "in old habit" wanted to introduce the sports report, but soon realized that it had fallen into the news category. "A misunderstanding, which both had to laugh about", explained NDR.
Daubner's laughing fits
It was not Daubner's first laughing fit in her career. In late September 2023, she laughed during the "Tagesschau" even with tears. In the year 2000, a cleaner appeared behind her on screen and did her work, which Daubner suppressed a laugh. A year earlier, she had moderated the news program for the first time. In 1987, she worked for the first time as a newsreader, back then still for the radio of the GDR at DT64.
Despite the minor panic caused by her colleague's misfortune, Susanne Daubner managed to regain her composure during "Tagesthemen" on Thursday. Jessy Wellmer, the sports-focused moderator, accidentally introduced the news segment instead of the sports report, leading to Daubner's uncontrollable laughter.
As news presenters, Daubner and Wellmer found humor in the incident, attributing it to a simple misunderstanding. Daubner continued her broadcast, recalling Germany's victory in Marseille against Australia in the Olympics, which only added to her amusement.
Reminiscing about her past experiences, Daubner recalled a similar incident from late September 2023 during "Tagesschau." A cleaner appeared on screen unexpectedly, causing her to laugh, even with tears in her eyes. This instance wasn't her first experience with unwelcome distractions; in 1987, Daubner, then a newsreader for the GDR's radio at DT64, also dealt with a surprise interruption.
