Old man with magic foot doesn't want to throw away dream again
Marco Reus is quite sure. "The stadium," promises Borussia Dortmund's long-serving captain ahead of the league clash against Bayern Munich on Saturday (18:30/Sky and live ticker on ntv.de), "will be on fire". The last time Signal Iduna Park was on fire after a match against the serial champions was five years ago. BVB's last league win against Munich came on November 10, 2018 - thanks to two goals from Reus in a 3-2 victory.
The 34-year-old is no longer quite as explosive as he was back then and is unlikely to reach his absolute top form again due to his age. However, the fine-footed ball wizard can still make the difference. "Of course he's getting older, that's clear and you have to take that into account," said managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke in an interview with Sky: "But we knew beforehand that Marco is always the one responsible for the 1-0, which is why we extended his contract."
The contract runs until the end of the season. However, Reus has recently done a lot to ensure that his time at the club close to his heart has not yet run out. After a difficult start to the season, he recently started eight competitive matches in a row.
Only twelve goals until the greatest legend
"He's improved from game to game," said coach Edin Terzić, praising Reus for his "great sense of timing, space and passing". Reus is also "extremely important" as a "pressing trigger". Reus also scored the only goal in the league against Wolfsburg and in the DFB Cup against Hoffenheim. He has scored three goals in seven league games. "We're keeping our fingers crossed that he stays healthy and can continue to perform like this," said Terzic.
Health has always been Reus' biggest problem. He was slowed down by countless injuries, but always fought his way back. After voluntarily relinquishing his captain's armband in the summer, Reus had a difficult start and often found himself on the substitutes' bench. However, he was "very hard-working" during this phase, praised Terzić. We know exactly "what we have in him", added Watzke.
Reus is still twelve goals short of catching up with BVB record goalscorer Adi Preißler (177). One or two more should be added against Bayern. "Anything is always possible at home, we've proven that in recent years," said Reus: "We need a very good day and hopefully we'll get one." A win would be a real statement in the Bundesliga title race. Even after the drama in May, Reus has not given up on the dream of standing in front of the quaking South Stand with the championship trophy and later driving around Borsigplatz.
Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus is looking forward to the Soccer Bundesliga clash against Bayern Munich, saying that the Signal Iduna Park will be on fire. This is a significant match for Reus, as he scored two goals in Borussia Dortmund's last league win against Bayern Munich back in 2018.
Coach Edin Terzic has praised Reus' recent form, noting his "great sense of timing, space and passing" and his importance as a "pressing trigger". Reus has scored three goals in seven league games and is working hard to stay healthy and continue his impressive performances.
